Testaccio Neighborhood

An urban landscape strategy addressing microclimate, mobility, and fragmented open spaces within a dense, historically layered district. The analysis highlights challenges such as the urban heat island effect, limited green infrastructure, and disconnected public spaces, alongside opportunities in strong cultural identity, solar access, and proximity to the Tiber River. The proposal introduces a network of green corridors, permeable surfaces, and slow-mobility systems to improve environmental performance and accessibility. Interventions focus on reactivating courtyards, condominium gardens, and rooftops as semi-private and communal spaces, integrating water management, vegetation, and social functions. Vertical gardens and bioclimatic design strategies further enhance urban resilience, transforming Testaccio into a more connected, climate-responsive, and livable neighborhood.
